Charles was born in 1880 the son of Thomas W China a lace worker and Mary China. He was the brother of Mary, Ellen, John, Emma and Thomas China. He married Catherine Frogatt 6/2/1904 at Nottingham Registration Office. On 7th November 1906 their son Thomas William was born in Nottingham. In 1911 they lived at 21a Page Street Nottingham.
He was a French polisher in 1911.

South Staffordshire Regiment
Charles attested at Nottingham on 11th December 1915 and the following day he was posted to the reserves. He was mobilised on 12th July 1916 and reported for duty at Derby on 13th July 1916. He underwent his training and on 27th January 1917 he joined the South Staffordshire Regiment. He served on home duties until 10th February 1917 and on 11th February he joined the British Expeditionary Force in France. He served on the Western Front until 1st July 1917 when he was returned to home duties on 2nd July. He was posted to the Labour Corps on 3rd August 1917 and eventually discharged from the army on 1st December 1917 as being no longer physically fit to serve. 18th May 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “CHINA. – On May –, at 50, Peas Hill-road, the beloved husband of Catherine China, of pneumonia, in his 37th year. Peace after pain.
