James was born in 1890 the son of Herbert a coal miner and Catherine Gascoyne. His siblings surviving infancy were William, Edith, Herbert, Kate, Linda, Albert, Jane and Vera Gascoyne. In 1911 they lived at 38 Coupland Place Somercotes. James married Sarah Ann Scothern in 1914 and they lived at 33 Virginia Street Colwick Street Nottingham.

9th Bn Alexandra Princess of Wales's Own (Yorkshire Regiment)
James enlisted at Nottingham and first entered theatre of war (France) on 26th August 1915. He was wounded and returned to England where he died at King George's Hospital in London. He was buried in Nottingham General Cemetery Screen Wall: 03355
