Albert Smeeton

Albert Smeeton was born in 1892 in Nottingham and was the son of the late Arthur a lace worker and Elizabeth Smeeton, née Poyzer of 1 Japan Court, High Cross Street, Nottingham. His father Arthur and his mother Elizabeth Poyzer were both born in Nottingham in 1864 , they were married in Nottingham in 1885 and went on to have the following children, Arthur b1887, Ada b1890, Albert b1892, Flora b1895 and Eva b1899. In the 1901 census the family are living at 1 Japan Court, High Cross Street, Nottingham. His mother Elizabeth died in 1901 in Nottingham, she was 37 yrs of age and his father died in 1909 in Nottingham he was 45 yrs old.

Private Albert Smeeton, enlisted in Nottingham and served with the 10th battalion Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire) Regiment. He landed in France on 29th July 1915, he transferred to the 1/4th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. He died of wounds on 8th April 1918 and is buried in Nottingham General Cemetery, he is commemorated on the Screen Wall.

Obituary published in the Nottingham Evening Post dated 9th April 1918 :- “SMEETON. – Died of wounds April 8th, received in action March 26th, 1918, Pte. A. Smeeton. At rest. – Mary.” Obituary published in the Nottingham Evening Post dated 8th April 1919 :- “SMEETON. – In loving memory of Pte. Albert Smeeton, died of wounds April 8th, 1918.
