Henry Smith was born in 1879 in Nottingham. He married his wife Sarah E Tomlinson in 1894, their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration area, they had a daughter Helen Mable born on 4th August 1910 and George born 14th August 1913. In 1910 and lived at 1 c Upper Eldon Street, Nottingham In the 1911 census the family are living at 1c Upper Eldon Street, Nottingham and are shown as Henry 32 yrs a canal boatman, he is living with his wife Sarah E 31 yrs and their daughter Helen Mable 10 months. His widow Sarah died on 25th January 1916 , his two children were looked after by Louisa Walker of 9 Camden Street, Nottingham their guardian.
In the 1911 census he is shown as a canal boatman.

Army Service Corps
Driver Henry Smith, enlisted at Nottingham and served with the Army Service Corps, he died on 18th September 1915 of bronchial pneumonia and he is buried in Nottingham General Cemetery, where he is commemorated on the Screen Wall.(ref. Screen Wall. 03367)
