Edgar Oliver was born in 1896 in Nottingham and was the son of James Arthur a shop assistant and Sarah Annie May née Taylor of 58 Cedar Road, Sherwood Rise, Nottingham His father James Arthur was born in 1863 in Nottingham and his mother Sarah Annie Taylor was born in 1866 also in Nottingham, they were married in 1888 in Nottingham and had a further child Charlotte Annie born 1891 in Nottingham . In the 1911 census the family are living at 58 Cedar Road, Sherwood Rise, Nottingham and are shown as James Arthur 48 yrs a shop assistant, he is living with his wife Sarah Annie 45 yrs and their 2 children Charlotte Annie 20 yrs a lady clerk and Edgar Oliver 14 yrs a junior clerk. Edgar marries his wife Dorothy Warsop in 1917, the marriage is recorded in the Basford Registration District, they live at 50 Cedar Road, Sherwood Rise, Nottingham.

Gunner Edgar Oliver May, originally enlisted on 13th January 1915 at Nottingham , he gave his age as 19 yrs and 7 months, and his address as 50 Cedar Road, Sherwood Rise, Nottingham , his occupation was that of a clerk, he was posted to the Army Service Crops. However on 1st March 1915 he was discharged as not being likely to become an efficient soldier Para 392(iii) C Kings Regulations. He must have either re joined or was conscripted as he served with the 14th Siege Battery Royal Garrison Artillery, he died of wounds at 2nd General Hospital, Chelsea, on 18th May 1918. His body was returned to his family in Nottingham and he is buried in Nottingham Church Cemetery.
In memoriam published 17th May 1919 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “MAY. – In loving memory of our dear and only son, Gnr.
