Leonard Gunn was born in 1891 the son of the late Walter a railway building inspector and Elizabeth Ann Gunn née Donson and the brother of Edith Annie Gunn. In 1911 the family lived at 64 Heskey Street Nottingham and later Park Lodge Park Row Nottingham. Walter was born in 1866 at Greasley, Elizabeth Ann Donson was born in 1868 at Bassingham, Lincolnshire, they were married on 7th November 1888 at St Laurence Church, Heanor,
Leonard Gunn was a warehouseman in the lace trade.

Gunner Leonard Gunn enlisted at Nottingham on 19th October 1915, giving his age as 24 yrs and 5 months, he was a lace warehouseman, he joined the Royal Garrison Artillery at Dover on 25th October 1915. He died at 5th Canadian General Hospital at Etaples of Laryngitis on 12th May 1918 and is buried at Etaples Military Cemetery.
