Army Service Corps
Mee enlisted on 9 May1916 and was discharged on 20 March 1917, 'no longer physically fit for war service'. His army service record notes 'his conduct has been good whilst in hospital where he has spent all his service except 4 days.' He was suffering from mitral regurgitation. Mitral insufficiency (MI), mitral regurgitation or mitral incompetence is a disorder of the heart in which the mitral valve does not close properly when the heart pumps out blood. Today the condition can be treated with surgery which is usually successful. James died at home on 22 July 1917 and was buried in Nottingham Church (Rock) Cemetery (St Paul's 9638). Although he died four months after he was medically discharged from the Army he was commemorated on Nottingham St Andrew's war memorial and is also recorded on the CWGC 'Debt of Honour'.
