Herbert Toplis was born in 1890 the son of the late Albert Charles an iron fitter and Mary Ann Toplis née Day of 40 Marple Street, Nottingham. Albert Charles was born in 1848 at Bulwell, he died in 1906 aged 58yrs Mary Ann Day was born in 1850 at Nottingham, she died in 1902 aged 52 yrs, they were married in 1867 at Nottingham, they went on to have 8 children. In 1911 Herbert has left the family home, he is living at 46 Edwin Street, Nottingham and is shown as a boarder, single 21 yrs and a painter, he is living with Emma Wakefield 62 yrs a widow and a lace hand. His army service record shows his sister in law Ellen Toplis of 35 Conway Street, Nottingham as his next of kin.

13th Bn King's Royal Rifle Corps
Rifleman Herbert Toplis enlisted on 11th September 1914 at Nottingham, giving his age as 24 yrs and 304 days, his occupation was that of a polisher. He was posted to the King's Royal Rifle Corps and landed in France on 30th July 1915. He was killed in action on 14th November 1916 and having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.
His brother Spr. Ernest Toplis was called up for service and following training he was drafted to France. He was killed in action in the Ypres Salient on 26/06/1917, and was buried at Bedford House Cemetery.
