John was born in 1897 in Nottingham and was the son of Charles Samuel a printer and compositer and Susan Turton nee Champelovier, of 55, Broad Oak St., Nottingham, His father Charles Samuel was born in 1860 in Nottingham and his mother Susan Champelovier was born in 1863 also in Nottingham, they also had the following children :- Arthur Harry,Florence E, Frederick William, Sarah Helen,John and Harold In the 1901 census the family are living at 44 Corporation Road, Nottingham; his siblings are Charles S (17), Arthur Harry (15), Florence E (13), Frederick William (11), Sarah Helen (9) and Harold (3). .
Although not named on the Dakeyne Street Lads Club (2nd Nottingham Coy Boys Brigade) memorial, the ROH in the BB Gazette of June 1918 lists: '2nd Nottingham. Turton J, Private KOYLI,'

Formerly T/0356, Northumberland Fusilers. Died of wounds. Wulverghem-Lindenhoek Road Military Cemetery (grave ref IV.A.7).
His brother, L/Cpl Charles Turton 2/7th Bn Sherwood Foresters, also served and was killed 2 April 1917
