Leo Smith was born in 1897 at Blue Bell Hill Road, Nottingham and was the son of George Smith a picture frame gilder and Annie (Hannah) Smith née Page of 26 Sketchley Street, Blue Bell Hill Road, Nottingham. His father George was born in in 1861 at Hackney London and his mother Annie Page was born in 1864 in Tenbury Worcestershire, they were married in 1884 at Worcester and went on to have the following children, William Arthur b1886 Worcestershire, their remaining children were all born in Blue Bell Hill Road, Nottingham and were Alfred Edward b1895, Leo George b1897, Angela Mary b1898 and John Caswell b1911. In the 1911 census the family are living at 17 Dowson Street, Blue Bell Hill Road, Nottingham and are shown as George 50 yrs a picture frame gilder, he is living with his wife Annie 47 yrs and their children, William Arthur 16 yrs a picture frame moulder , Alfred Edward 16 yrs a blouse cutter, Leo George 14 yrs a bakers errand boy, Angela Mary 13 yrs a scholar and John Caswell 4 months old.
In the 1911 census he is a bakers errand boy.

9th Bn Northumberland Fusiliers
Corporal Leo Smith enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 9th battalion Northumberland Fusiliers Regiment. He landed in France on 15th July 1915 and was killed in action on 23rd August 1918 and having no known grave his nbame is commemorated on the Ploegsteert Memorial
