Private James Bramley enlisted in Nottingham he served with the 9th battalion Leicestershire Regiment , he was killed in action on 1st October 1917 and has no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Tyne Cott Memorial. Panel 50 to 51 On 01/10/1917 the Germans launched a strong attack on positions held by the Leicestershire Brigade at Polygon Wood, near Ypres. Using a smoke screen they advanced in waves and some managed to penetrate the 9th Battalion position. Despite heavy casualties the battalion counter-attacked and drove the Germans back, recovering all their previous losses. Soon after reinforcements arrived. Casualties were heavy and included Bramley.
