Father: Francis Chamberlain, born 1864 at Salford, Lancashire and working as a showcard and ticket writer. Mother: Emily, born 1861 at Salford. The family lived at 8 Bunny Terrace, Nottingham before moving to 4 Bruce Grove, Meadows, Nottingham. Sgt. Chamberlain had three brothers; Charles C., born in 1892 in Liverpool and working as a hairdresser, James Abraham, born in 1894 in Nottingham and working as a joiner and Reuben B., born in 1900 also in Nottingham. He also had one sister, Emily, born in 1901 in Nottingham.

Francis Chamberlain was called up for service and after training was drafted to France. His ability was such that he rose to the rank of sergeant. His battalion took part in the Battle of Poelcappelle in October 1917, which was part of the larger Third Battle of Ypres. A successful advance of 2,500 yards was made and consolidated, but Sgt Chamberlain was killed in action. His body was never recovered but his name was recorded on the Tyne Cot Memorial.
