Pte. Haines was in barracks at Aldershot when war broke out. The battalion embarked from Southampton and arrived at Le Havre on 13/08/1914. The battalion took part in the Great Retreat, marching some 236 miles before turning at the Marne. The battalion advanced to the Aisne and dug in. They were later moved to the Ypres Salient and held the line despite heavy German attacks. He was killed in action on 28/10/1914. His body was never recovered but his name was commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial.
