Samuel Lane was married in April 1908, and lived with his wife and two children at 1 South Street, Nottingham.

Pte. Lane moved with his battalion to the Somme and was caught up in the fighting for the fortified German position known as the Quadrilateral, east of the village of Ginchy. He was seriously wounded during the attack, and was taken down the line to hospital at Etaples. He died there on 17/09/1916 and was buried at Etaples Military Cemetery.
