Father: Joseph Leatherland, born in 1862 in Nottingham and working as a spring maker. Mother: Louisa E., born in 1864 in Nottingham. Brothers: Thomas H., born in 1891 and working as a railway parcels porter and James, born in 1902. Sisters: Louisa A., born in 1899 and Alice E., born in 1904. All the children were born in Nottingham. The family lived at 1 Lincoln Terrace, Alfred Street North Nottingham before moving to 16 Peas Hill Rise, Peas Hill Road, Nottingham.

Pte. Leather land volunteered for service and following training was drafted to France, arriving on 19/05/1915. In 1917 the battalion moved near to Passchendaele village and then moved forward under heavy machine gun fire. There were severe casualties which stopped the advance about 30 yards from the German line. They then dug in. Pte. Leather land was killed in this action on 02/12/1917, but his body was never recovered. His name was commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial.
