William Thomas Downes Richards was born in 1878. He was married in 1907 to Beatrice Rowe who was born in 1885 at Coalville Leicestershire. They lived at 3 Howard Street, Sutton in Ashfield before moving to 35 Handel Street Sneinton Nottingham.
William Richards worked as a grocer's assistant.

Following training Richards was drafted to France. His battery took part in the Third Battle of Ypres, where the artillery took particularly heavy casualties. He was killed in action on 21/07/1917 and buried at Vlamertinghe New Military Cemetery Grave Reference: I H 19.
