Father: Alfred Spear, born in 1876 in Nottingham and working as a woodwork machinist and later as a railway contractor's labourer. Mother: Rose Spear, born in 1878 in Lancashire and working as a lace dresser. They had four children; Annie, born in 1900, Rose, born in 1903, William, born in 1907 and Ethel, born in November 1910. All the children were born in Nottingham. The family lived at 21 Crossland Street, Nottingham before moving to 11 Foundry Yard, Leenside, Nottingham.
Alfred Spears worked as a railway labourer.

1/7th Bn Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment)
Pte. Spear volunteered for service and following training he was drafted to France on 28/02/1915. On 05/10/1915 working parties were sent to trenches near Hillock and moved down to Mazingarbe. Whilst this was happening a few casualties were incurred, including Pte. Spear who was killed in action. His body was not recovered, but his name was commemorated on the Loos Memorial.
