Father: Samuel Henry Spooner, born in 1876 at Sheffield, working as a railway stableman, and later as a leather dresser's labourer. Mother: Emily Ann Spooner, born in 1875 at Wilsford, Lincolnshire. Brother: George, born in November 1900. Sisters: Frances Florence, born in 1902, Lilian, born in 1907, Alice, born in 1909 and Jennie, born in 1911. All the children were born in Nottingham. The family lived at 11 Manning Terrace, Abbotsford Street, Nottingham before moving to 25 Edwin Street, At. Ann's Well Road, Nottingham.

Spooner volunteered for service, holding No. 24827 in the Sherwood Foresters, before being posted to 11th Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers. Following training, he joined the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force and reached Gallipoli on 05/08/1915, taking part in the Suvla Bay offensive. The unit then returned to France and was sent to the Ypres Salient, where he was killed in action on 10/08/1917, having already been twice wounded during his army service. His body was not recovered, but his name was commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial at Ypres.
