Private Henry Cecil Holmes enlisted on 7th October 1915 at Nottingham, giving his age as 19 yrs and 11 months, his address was 4 Percy Place, Fisher Gate, Nottingham. He served with the 1/7th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He went to France 6th March 1916 and died of gunshot wounds, 4th July 1916, aged 18, to his right shoulder at No. 33, Casualty Clearing Station, Bethune, France. He was killed in action and is buried in Bethune Town Cemetery (grave ref V.F.49)
Nottingham Post notice (abridged), 10 July 1916: 'Holmes. Killed in action July 4h 1916, Private HC (Chas) Holmes, Sherwood Foresters, age 18, eldest son of Mrs and the late Mr E (sic) Holmes, Percy Place. Mother, sisters, brother.'
