Joseph Scragg (junior) was baptised on 18th August 1881 at St Matthias Church, Lancashire, he was the son of Joseph Scragg (senior) a tripe dresser and Emily Scragg née Johnson of Hill House Bingham Nottinghamshire Joseph Scragg (senior) was born in 1855 at Stockport, Cheshire, Emily Johnson was born in 1860 at Tarvin, Cheshire, they were married on 11th August 1879 at St Judes Church, West Derby, Liverpool. they went on to have 12 children, sadly 4 died in infancy or early childhood. Around 1885 the family moved to Nottingham, and around the turn of the century 1900 the family began using the surname Hynes. His mother Emily died in 1908, aged 48 yrs she was known as Emily Scragg at this time. Joseph Scragg married Alice Ada Frances Snelling (born 9th August 1885) on 22nd June 1902 at St Johns Church, Newington, Surrey, they lived at 17 Fisher Gate, Nottingham. Commencing 22nd April 1918 his widow Alice was awarded a pension of 13 shillings and 9 pence a week. CWGC shows his widow to be Alice Ada Scragg of 9 Southchurch Avenue Southend-on-Sea Essex.
He was a tripe dresser.

9th Bn Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment)
Private Joseph Scragg enlisted at Derby whilst residing at Southend on Sea, he served with the 9th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment and was killed in action on 5th October 1917 having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial
