Person Details
Radford, Nottingham
Walter was the youngest child of Robert and Emily Sentence, who were both born in Lincolnshire; Robert in Barrowby where some of their older children were born. Robert died 4 February 1905 age 52 and Emily died 2 October 1918 age 65. The 1911 census records that they had eleven children of whom two had died. The headstone in the General Cemetery commemorates a daughter, Florence, who died 13 November 1892 age 1yr 11m and a son, Arthur Robert, who died in infancy. The 1901 and 1911 censuses, when the family lived at 14 Vane Street, variously record the following seven sons: Joseph W, Robert, William, Harry, Frederick, George, Walter. Both Joseph W and Robert were out of the home at the time of the 1911 census, their brothers, all single, were at home. No daughters were at home on either of the census dates. The obituary notice in the Nottingham Post, August 1918, to his brother, Harry, refers to Harry's 'mother, father-in-law and sisters, Bertha, Lily and Sisee'; it is possible that one of these women was Harry's wife. Harry served as a private in the Grenadier Guards and died of wounds in France on 14 August 1918. A notice in the Nottingham Post in January 1919 indicates that Walter was married with two children.
in 1911 Walter was described as a 'butcher's assistant'. An older brother, Robert, age 19 in 1901, was a butcher, and Walter may have joined him in this trade.
