William Everard Yates was born in 1896 at Nottingham, he was baptised on 14th February 1897 at Osmanton parish church, Derbyshire and was the only son of Arthur William a card board box maker and Edith Caroline Yates née Moore of Little Eaton Derbyshire. His father Arthur William was born in 1864 at Smethwick, Birmingham, his mother Edith Caroline Moore was born in 1869 at Little Eaton, they were married on 13th December 1891 at Osmanton parish church. In the 1911 census the family were living at 26 Bute Avenue, Lenton Nottingham and were shown as Arthur William 47 yrs a cardboard box maker, he is living with his wife Edith Caroline 42 yrs and their son William Everard 15 yrs a cardboard box maker.
He was a cardboard box maker in 1911 and a shirt cutter upon enlistment.

Rifleman William Everard Yates enlisted at Nottingham on 6th September 1914 giving his age as 19 yrs and 26 days, his occupation was that of a shirt cutter, his next of kin was his father Arthur Yates of 55 Wordsworth Road, Radford Boulevard, Nottingham. He was posted tot he King's Royal Rifle Corps and arrived at their depot at Winchester on 9th September 1914. He landed in France on 19th May 1915, he was wounded a gun shot wound to the thigh and he was returned to England for treatment. Once he had recovered he returned to France on 9th May 1917. He was again wounded in action on 2nd April 1918 a gun shot wound to the head, he was returned to England and was being treated at 1st London General Hospital, Camberwell when he died on 26th May 1918. He is buried at St Pauls Churchyard, Little Eaton, Derbyshire.
