John Bates was born in 1894 at Sutton in Ashfield and was the son of George a coal miner and Pamela Bates née Henstock of 38 Osberton Street, Dalton Brook, Rotherham. His father George was born in 1855 at Blackheath, Staffordshire and his mother Pamela Henstock was born in 1855 at Sutton in Ashfield, they were married on 28th March 1891 at Mansfield Registry office, they had a further child, Georgina born 1892 Sutton in Ashfield. In the 1911 census the family are living at 38 Osberton Street, Dalton Brook, Rotherham and are shown as George Bates 56 yrs a coal miner, he is living with his wife Pamela 56 yrs and their children, Georgina 19 yrs working at home and John 17 yrs a pony driver below ground. Also at the address are 3 male adult lodgers all working in the coal mines. His mother Pamela died in 1913 aged 57 yrs and his father died in 1917 aged 61 yrs John married his wife Violet Oldfield in 1917 their marriage was recorded in the Mansfield Registration district

Private John Bates enlisted on 27th August 1914 at Rotherham, he gave his age as 20 yrs and 150 days, his occupation as a collier, his next of kin was his father George of 53 Osberton Street, Dalton Brooks, Rotherham. Posted to the Yorks and Lancashire regiment he served until 28th November 1914 when he was discharged from the Army, as not being likely to become an efficient solder due to chronic dyspepsia. Later in the war he either re enlisted or was called up, he died on 9th August 1919 in hospital at Sheffield and was buried in Sutton in Ashfield Cemetery.
