Gordon Handley Johnson was the eldest son of George Handley Johnson and his wife, Caroline of 48 Clifton Grove, Rotherham. George was a self employed architect surveyor. Gordon was born in Rotherham, Yorks in 1894 and was followed by four siblings, Charles Barry, Gwendoline Mary, Hector Lennox and Janet Celia. They moved from Rotherham to Maltby around the turn of the 20th century. By 1911 Gordon was living with his parents and siblings at 5 Cliff Villas, Maltby and was following in his father’s footsteps by training as a architectural student.

Nottinghamshire Yeomanry (Sherwood Rangers)
Gordon enlisted at Retford in the Household Cavalry Regiment, joining the 1/1st Sherwood Rangers Yeomanry Battalion. The battalion was sent to Egypt in April 1915 and was later landed at Suvla Bay, Gallipoli on the 18 Aug 1915. After the Gallipoli disaster they were evacuated back to Egypt in December 1915. In February 1916 they were sent to Salonica, Greece as part of the 7th Mounted Brigade and where Gordon was killed in action on the 7th or 12th of October ’16. He is buried in the Mikra British Cemetery, Greece. A few days after Gordon’s death, his brother Charles Barry, enlisted in the Army and was wounded with gunshot wounds to his right arm but survived the ordeal.
