Edward was born in 1894 in Retford and was the eldest son of Benjamin and Annie Broughton, of Strawberry Villa, Newtown, Retford, Benjamin was a fitter in the local rubber works and had 5 children including Edward.In the 1901 census the family are living at 80 Moorgate Retford.By the 1911 census the family are still living at 80 Mooregate, Retford ,Benjamin and Annie and their eldest, daughter Amy Garland, along with Edward who is now 17 years of age and a clerk in in an engineering works also present are his three younger brothers Benjamin, Richard and Ronald.
Was a clerk in the office of Messrs J W Jenkins and Co. Ltd. Beehive Works prior to enlistment.

10th Bn Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment)
Edward enlisted in Derby in September 1914 and served with D Company 10th battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys Regiment) his medal index card shows he first entered a theatre of war in France on 14th July 1915 he was killed in action on 31st October 1916. His body was never recovered and identified and his name is therefore commemorated on the Thiepval memorial, The Somme.
Pte Edward Broughton Retford Times 8 Dec 1916 Mr and Mrs Benjamin Broughton, Strawberry Villa, Newtown, Retford have received information from the Record Office, Lichfield, that their eldest son, Pte Edward Broughton, Sherwood Foresters has been posted missing after an engagement at a place not stated on October 31st last. He last wrote home to his parents on October 22nd and he was then in good spirits. He is 23 years of age, was educated at St Saviour’s School, and volunteered for the Army in September 1914 while a clerk in the office of Messrs J W Jenkins and Co. Ltd. Beehive Works. Pte Benjamin Clarence Broughton, the second son of Mr and Mrs Broughton is also in the Sherwood Foresters and is now in Ireland. He joined the Army last January and was formerly a garment maker at the Northern Rubber Works. He is 20 years of age.
