He was the son of Frederick and Ann Casburn and the brother of Mabel and Maurice Casburn. In 1901 they lived at Airedale Grove Oulton with Woodlesford Yorkshire. He was lodging with a cousin Webster Benson in 1911 at Clarborough Retford Nottinghamshire.
He was working on his cousin's farm in 1911.

9th Bn Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment)
He enlisted at Retford. 9th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment) began tours of duty in the trenches on 27th August 1915 on the eastern slope of Karakol Dagh around the area of Jephson's Post. Edward was killed on the first day of this tour, probably whilst moving into the front line.
