Charles was born in 1890 and was the son of George William and Annie Lindley, of 14, Wright Wilson St., Retford, In the 1901 census he is 11 years of age and living on Wright Wilson Street, Ordsall with his widowed grandfather William Brook, a lamp oil dealer. By the 1911 census he is living with his parents George, a general dealer and Alice at 14 Wright Wilson Street, Retford, George and Alice state on the census that they have had eight children but have sadly lost five and only three still survive. Charles is now 21 years of age, single and an iron foundry labourer, also living at the address is his younger sister Edith.

11th Bn Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment)
Charles enlisted on 3rd September 1914 at Retford and served with service number 11342 with the Leicestershire regiment. He gave his age as 24 years and 288 days and his occupation as that of labourer. His father is George and mother Alice 14 Wright Wilson Street, Retford , he was posted to Aldershot for training, however on 19th October 1914 after only serving for 47 days his was discharged from the Army under Kings Regulation 392 , being medically unfit to serve. He enlisted once again in Derby and on this occasion served with service number 55822 in the 11th battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys ) Regiment. he was killed in action on 5th October 1918 and he is buried in Guizancourt Farm Cemetery, Gouy , Aisne, France (grave ref A.22)
CWGC record gives age at death as 24 years , he was actually 28 years of age.
