john was born in Retford in 1891 Son of Arthur a canal labourer and the late Mary Ann Markham, of Retford. In the 1901 census the family are living at The Wharf, Retford however John is not at home on the night of the census. By 1911 his mother Mary Ann has died and his widowed father Arthur 42 years is still living at The Wharf and is a labourer for the Urban District Council and is bringing up four of his children at the address. However John has left home by this time and is now 20 years of age and a servant living with Herbert Wood a licensed victualler at the new Dolphin Inn at Warringate, Wakefield and is a general domestic servant.

Machine Gun Corps
John enlisted at Wakefield where he was working , at first he served with the King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry with service number 4098 , he later transferred to the 62nd battalion, Machine Gun Corps. he died of wounds in a field hospital in France on 27th May 1918 and he is buried in Doullens Communal cemetery Extension, No 2 , Somme, France grave reference I C 13.
