George was born on 16th September 1897 in Ordsall and was the son of Annie Merrills, of 13, Woolpack St., Retford, and the late George Merrills. His father George was a railway engine driver and he and his wife had a very large family of 11 children, however 2 of the children died prior to 1911. In the 1911 census the family are living at 62 Darrell Road, Retford, George (junior ) is 13 years of age and an errand boy, also at the address are his three brothers William, Walter and leonard and his four sisters Mary, Hilda, Edith and Kathleen It was a double tragedy for the family when both George and his elder brother William were both killed while serving the colours during 'Great War'

George enlisted at Retford and served with service number 14387 with the Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) regiment. He was later transferred to the 2nd battalion Cheshire Regiment. he went to France on 15th July 1915 (medal index card) he was killed in action on 3rd October 1915 ,he has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Loos memorial.
George's older brother William was also killed during the Great war on 1st July 1916 while serving with the 11th Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment
