Jabez was born in 1888 in Old Leake, just outside Boston in Lincolnshire and was the son of Jabez an agricultural labourer and Minnie Mountain (nee Bastow) Jabez senior and his wife Minnie had a very large family of 12 children, however only nine of whom survived to 1911 and lived all their lives in Old Leake. In the 1901 census the family are living at Leak Village with five of their children, Jabez (jnr) who is 13 years of age and Ethel, George Lizzie and Lewis. By the 1911 census Jabez (junior) has left home and is a boarder, 23 years of age , single and a farm labourer working on a farm at Eaton just outside Retford with James Sutton and his family a labourer on the farm. In the same census his father Jabez (senior) 56 years is still living in Old Leak but is now a widow living with three of his children. While living and working in the Eaton area Jabez (junior) met his future wife Margaret Alice Bell whom he married at Retford in 1916, they went on to have 4 children.

Machine Gun Corps (Infantry)
Jabez enlisted at Retford on 3rd January 1917 giving his place of birth as Boston. At first he served with service number 45087 in the South Staffordshire regiment, he later transferred to the 38th battalion of the Machine Gun Corps. He was killed in action on 9th October 1918 and is buried in prospect Hill Cemetery, Gouy,Aisne,France grave reference VI B 18.
Pte Jabez Mountain Retford Times 8th November 1918 21 Months in Army Pte Jabez Mountain, M.G.C. and formerly in the South Staffs, husband of Mrs Mountain, 1 Caledonian Road, Retford, was killed in action on October 9th. He was horseman to Messrs E and J Curtis, Eaton and joined the colours on January 3rd 1917. The deceased was 30 years of age and leaves three young children. He had only been in France five weeks since his last leave. He was a native of Lincolnshire.
