Benjamin Samuel Woolner was born in Lowestoft, Suffolk in 1881. His parents were Alfred and Ellen Woolner of Lowestoft. The couple had five children altogether including three daughters, Florence, Alice and Violet and resided at 62 Cambridge Road, Lowestoft. Benjamin appears to be missing from two of the census but in 1907 he is in Retford where he married Alice Maud Taylor, a local Retford girl. They set up home at 16 Chapelgate and by 1911, Benjamin was supporting his wife by working as a general labourer.

2nd Bn Lincolnshire Regiment
Benjamin enlisted at Gainsborough in the 2nd Battalion of the Lincolnshire Regiment and went to France where he was killed in action on the first day of the Battle of the Somme and is buried in the Blighty Valley Cemetery Authuille Wood, France.
