Sutton Bonington
Mark Bates was born in 1883 at Sutton Bonnington and was the son of John a bricklayers labourer and Sarah Bates of Sutton Bonnington. His father John was born in 1846 at Sutton Bonnington and his mother Sarah Bates was born in 1844 at Warton, Warwickshire, they were married C1879 and went on to have 5 children, sadly one died in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were Frank b 1875 Normanton, their remaining children all born in Sutton Bonnington were Walter b1878, Mark b1883, Albert b1885 and Edith Ellen b1889. Mark Bates married his wife Sarah Waters Rose (born 1875 Wellsbourrne, Warwickshire) in 1910, their marriage was recorded in the Loughborough Registration district In the 1911 census Mark and his new wife Sarah Waters are living at Shipley Lane, Shottle, Belper and are shown as Mark 27 yrs a waggoner on a farm, he is living with his wife Sarah Waters 36 yrs In the same 1911 census his parents are living at Sutton Bonnington village and are shown as John Bates 64 yrs a brick layers labourer, he is living with his wife Sarah 66 yrs they state they have been married for 32 yrs and have had 5 children however one has died.
Lance Corporal
Lance Corporal Mark Bates served with the Scottish Rifles. He landed in France on 2nd October 1915 where he served until 30th July 1916. He was discharged from the Army on 31st August 1918 at 2nd Scottish General Hospital as being no longer fit for active service. He died in 1919 aged 35 yrs his death was recorded in the Belper registration District.
Possibly buried in or near Belper. He is not listed on the CWGC
