Joseph Cross was born in 1899 at Carlton and was the son of Arthur a butcher and Annie Cross née Goodacre of 21 Cambridge Street, Loughborough. His father Arthur was born in 1864 at Willoughby on the Wolds, his mother Annie Goodacre was born in 1863 also at Willoughby, they were married in 1886 at Willoughby, they went on to have the following children, Florence Gertrude b1887 at Nottingham, Arthur William b1891 at Netherfield, Hilda Alice b1893 Carlton, Ada Annie b1896 Carlton, Joseph b1899 Carlton, Mabel b1901 Carlton and Ethel May b1904 Carlton. In the 1911 census the family are living at 4 Manor Road, Carlton and are shown as Arthur 47 yrs a butcher he is living with his wife Annie 48 yrs and their children, Florence Gertrude 24 yrs working at home, Arthur William 20 yrs a butcher, Hilda Alice 18 yrs a cashier at Boots druggist, Ada Annie 15 yrs a cashier at Boots druggist, Joseph 12 yrs a scholar, Mabel 10 yrs a scholar and Ethel May 7 yrs of age.

58th Coy Machine Gun Corps (Infantry)
Private Joseph Cross enlisted at Loughborough whilst residing at Carlton, he initialled served with the service number 33895 in the Leicestershire Regiment. He was killed in action whilst serving with the 58th company Machine Gun Corps on 20th June 1917. He is buried at Noreuil Australian Cemetery, France.
