Born 1900 at Carlton William was the adopted child of Samuel Godfrey. In 1911 Samuel was a framework knitter living at 16 Foxhill Road, Carlton with William and also an adopted daughter Elsie Malpas.

At the age of 17 he joined the TR/5 reserve battalion, attesting at Hucknall. He was posted to the 15th Battalion in 1918. Killed in action he was commemorated on the Pozieres memorial, in the Somme region of France. He was eligible for the Victory and British medals but died with no known next of kin. On his service record he listed as his Guardian, Mrs E Malpass of No 6 Hastings St, Carlton. His personal effects were forwarded to Mr S Godfrey of No 6 Hasting Street, Carlton Hill.
