Born about 1889 in Lancashire, son of Mary Howarth. Mary moved from Lancashire to Nottinghamshire at some point before 1895 when her son Joseph was born and in 1897 she married again to Thomas Pierpoint. In 1901 Tom and his brother Joseph were living at 24 Gladstone Street, Carlton with their stepfather Thomas Pierpoint and mother Mary. Also in the family were his half brothers Fred, Samuel and Gilbert Pierpoint. By 1911 he was working in the furniture trade as a timber carrier along with his half brother Fred.

He enlisted in Nottingham. Killed in action he was buried in Aveluy Wood Cemetery (Lancashire dump), Mesnil-Martinsart in the Somme region of France. He was eligible for the British and Victory medals. He is also commemorated on a family grave in Carlton cemetery along with his half brother Fred Pierpoint.
