John William Thorley (junior) was born in 1899 at Radford and was the son of John William Thorley (senior) a painter and Emma Thorley née Wright of 61 Kirkstead Street, Nottingham. His father John William (senior) was born in 1869 at Lenton and his mother Emma Wright was born in 1869 at Debry, they were married in 1889 at Nottingham and went on to have 9 children, sadly one died in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were, May b1889, Ernest b1893, Ethel b1895, Ada b1897, John William b1899, George Arthur b1901, Emma Doris b1905, and Elsie b1908 all were born in Radford. In the 1911 census the family are living at 61 Kirkstead Street, Hyson Green, Nottingham and are shown as John William Thorley 42 yrs a painter, he is living with his wife Emma 42 yrs and their children, Ernest 18 yrs an apprentice painter, Ethel 16 yrs a swiss lace maker, Ada 14 yrs a swiss lace maker, John William 12 yrs a scholar, George Arthur 10 yrs a scholar, Emma Doris 6 yrs and Elsie 3 yrs of age.

1st Bn Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment)
Private John William Thorley enlisted at Derby whilst residing at Carlton, he served with the 1st battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He died of wounds on 24th April 1918 and is buried at Adelaide Cemetery, Villers Bretonneux, grave reference II.C.1
Although his date of death on the St Pauls memorial is given as 23rd April 1918 all official sources , CWGC, SDGW and Soldiers effects give 24th April 1918.
