Joseph Alfred Tizzard was born in 1884 in London and was the son of Joseph William and Annie Tizzard née Hawksbee of 77 Garden Avenue Fox Hill Road Carlton Nottingham. He married his wife Elizabeth Mosby (born 7th September 1885) in 1908 their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration area, they had five children, Grace Lilian born 2nd July 1905, Joseph William born 5th July 1908, Stanley born 4th July 1910, Edward born 4th April 1912 and Robert Alfred born 18th June 1914. they lived at 77 Foxhill Road, Carlton. Following his death his widow Elizabeth was awarded a pension of 31 shillings and 3 pence a week which commenced on 2nd July 1917.

Rifleman Joe Alfred Tizzard, enlisted on 8th November 1915 in Nottingham, he gave his age as 31 yrs and 1 month , he was living at 77 Foxhill Road, Carlton, he gave his religion as Church of England, his next of kin was his wife Elizabeth of the same address. He served with the 1/7th Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment (Robin Hood Rifles) He embarked from Southampton on 29th March 1916 and arrived at the 46th Division Base Depot in France on 30th March 1916. He joined his unit in the field on 22nd April 1916 and was killed in action on 9th December 1916. At that time the war diary reports that the Germans were very active with trench mortars and rifle grenades. He is buried in Foncquevillers Military Cemetery, he had served for 256 days.
Death notice published 24th January 1917 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “TIZZARD. – Killed in action, December 9th, 1916, Private J. A. Tizzard, Sherwood Foresters, 77, Foxhill Road, Carlton.
