Leonard Swinscoe was born in 1894 at Carlton and was the only surviving son of John a labourer and Theresa Swinscoe née Bagnall of 21 Dryden Street, Nottingham. His father John was born in 1866 at Carlton and his mother Theresa Bagnall was born in 1876 at West Bromwich, they were married in 1892 at Nottingham. They had a further child who died in infancy. In the 1911 census the family are living at 107 Cemetery Road, Carlton and are shown as John 45 yrs a labourer and Theresa 35 yrs and their son Leonard 17 yrs an out of work pony driver/coal miner. Leonard married his wife Edith Self in 1917 at Nottingham they went on to have a son Leonard born in 1917 at Carlton.
He was a coal miner pony driver.

9th Bn York and Lancaster Regiment
Private Leonard Swinscoe enlisted at Nottingham whilst residing at Carlton. He initially served with the service number 68075 in the Lincolnshire Regiment. He died of wounds on 11th October 1918 whilst serving with the 9th battalion York and Lancaster Regiment. He is buried at Roisel Communal Cemetery Extension, grave reference II.A.26
