Person Details
William was born in 1883 the son of Thomas a labourer and Emma Allcock (née Martin ). His father was born at Foston, Lincolnshire, his mother in 1861 at Arnold, Married in 1878 they had ten children, nine surviving infancy: Annie b. 1880, Elizabeth b.1882, William b.1883, Arthur b.1885, Lily b.1887, Thomas b.1889, Emma b.1891, Martha b.1892 and John b.1894. In 1911 Thomas’s family continued to live at Arnold whilst he lived at Westhouses Alfreton with the Downing family. Thomas’s mother Emma died in 1914 in Arnold aged 53 and his father Thomas (senior) died in 1936 aged 80.
He was a colliery banksman.

10th Bn Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment)
He enlisted at Nottingham in 1915 for an engagement of 3 years. After training he was posted to the 3rd Battalion Sherwood Foresters at Sunderland to await his posting to a battalion in France and Flanders. Whilst in Sunderland he served with 'H' Company. He was posted to the 10th Battalion Sherwood Foresters and during his service he saw some horrific fighting with the battalion. On 14th February 1916 he was killed in action near Ypres. He has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Menin Gate memorial Ypres Belgium.
His younger brother Thomas Allcock also died whilst serving during the Great War.
