He enlisted at Hucknall and after training was sent to the Sherwood Foresters Base Depot in France. He is known to have served in the 8th Battalion Machine Gun Corps which was formed on 15th January 1918, in the 8th Division Leonard, a member of “C” Company 8th Battalion Machine Gun Corps is recorded as missing in action on 28th May 1918, when he was wounded and captured by the Germans. He died of his wounds on 28th May 1918, in German hands.
He is buried at Berlin South Western Cemetery, Germany
