Leonard William Clarke was born in 1899 at Hallam Fields, Derbyshire he was the son of John William a brewery drayman and Annie Clarke, of 5, Byron Terrace, Portland Street, Daybrook, Nottingham. His father John William was born in 1865 at Oxton, his mother Annie was born in 1868 at Radford, they were married C1896 and had the following children, Ivan Eric b1897 Bulwell and Leonard William b1899 at Ilkeston. In the 1911 census the family are living at 5 Byron Terrace, Portland Street, Daybrook and shown as John William Clarke 47 yrs a brewery drayman, he is living with his wife Annie 43 yrs and their children, Ivan Eric 14 yrs a gardener and Leonard 12 yrs a scholar.

Machine Gun Corps (Infantry)
Private Leonard William Clarke enlisted at Hucknall and after training was sent to the Sherwood Foresters Base Depot in France. He is known to have served in the 8th Battalion Machine Gun Corps which was formed on 15th January 1918, in the 8th Division Leonard, a member of “C” Company 8th Battalion Machine Gun Corps is recorded as missing in action on 28th May 1918, when he was wounded and captured by the Germans. He died of his wounds on 28th May 1918, in German hands. He is buried at Berlin South Western Cemetery, Grave Reference: X B 8
