George was born in 1893, at Mosborough, in Yorkshire, the son of Albert Edward and Polly Gray. The family moved to Arnold and by the 1911 census they are living on Wood Street, Arnold by this time his mother is a widow and at only 42 years of age, she has living with her 8 children and two grandchildren. George is shown as 17 years of age and is working underground in a colliery.

George enlisted into the Army, (probably as a regular soldier) when the family lived at 5 Simpkins Yard, Bond Street, Arnold, Nottinghamshire. He was killed in action during the battle of the Aisne.
