William was born in 1896 at Rugeley, Staffordshire the son of George and Alice Harvey, but moved with his family to Arnold. By the 1911 Cencus the family are shown living on Redhill, Arnold and William is 15 yrs of age and his occupation is that of colliery horse driver (below ground)
He was employed as a horse driver below ground at the local colliery

8th Bn Lincolnshire Regiment
He enlisted at the recruiting office at Nottingham, into the Lincolnshire Regiment and after training was posted to their 8th battalion. He was killed in action during the third day of the battle of the Somme.
His name is commemorated on the Thiepval memorial on the Somme,France
