Roland lived at Fern Cottage, Furlong Avenue was born at Arnold in 1898 the son of William and Sarah Marriott, in the 1911 Cencus the family are living at Furlong Street Avenue, Arnold, Roland is 13 yrs of age and is a cotton boy in the lace trade, he has 4 siblings. He attended the British School in Arnold. He worked for a Mr Birkin of Nottingham.

2nd Bn Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment)
As soon as he was able on his 18th birthday he enlisted into the Sherwood Foresters at Nottingham and after training was posted to the 2nd Battalion, he was killed in action at Villers Bretonneux during heavy shelling.
He is buried in Nine Elms British Cemetery, Belgium
