William Merrin was born in 1875 at Arnold , he married his wife Kitty Leivers (born 1879) in 1899 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they lived at Furlong Street, Arnold and went on to have two children, Winifred born 1904 and Arthur Stanley Merrin born 1909. In the 1911 census the family lived on Furlong Street Arnold Nottinghamshire and were shown as William Merrin 36 yrs a collier labourer, he is living with his wife Kitty 37 yrs and their children, Winifred 6 yrs and Arthur Stanley 1 year old.
In 1911 he was a coal labourer above ground.

11th Bn Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment)
Corporal William Merrin enlisted at Nottingham and served with the Sherwood Foresters Regiment, after basic training he was posted to 11th battalion which in February 1915 was based at Shorncliffe near Dover. The unit landed in France 27th of August 1915. The probability is that William died of wounds received around Hill 60, he died on 20th April 1917. He is buried at Faubourg D'Amiens Cemetery, Arras Grave Reference: IV B 4
