James was born at Nottingham in 1896, the son of Emma Moore of 3 Belvedere Place, Saville Street, Hyson Green, Nottingham. He had two brothers Frank and Edward and a sister Eliza. In the 1911 Census he was living with his widdowed mother Emma at Calverton Road, Arnold. He is 15 yrs of age, single and a coal miner ganger by trade.

He attested on the 5th September 1914 at Hucknall, he gave his age as 19 years and 292 days, states his father was deceased and that he lived at Kelks Yard, Arnold and that he was a brewer by trade. He signed up for the Lincolnshire Regiment and after training was posted to their 8th battalion. He was killed in action during an artillery barrage at Loos.
