Ernest was born in Sheffield in 1889, the son Frederick and Ellen Orange of 12 Balaclava Road, Sheffield. He had been employed by Witherley and Unwins, Pawnbrokers of 126 Infirmary Road, Sheffield. He had relatives in Arnold and Calverton and at some time prior to the outbreak of the Great War he moved to live in Arnold where he found employment working at “Jollies Jewellers” (a pawn shop). It was in Arnold that he met and married Mary Jane Rockley, setting up house at 2 Albion Terrace, Arnold, Nottingham. His father and mother in law “Rockley’s” lived at no 3. Ernest and Mary had two sons, Frederick Leslie and Ernest William . Sadly he was never to see his second son for during Mary’s pregnancy, in 1916 he had enlisted into the York and Lancaster Regiment with regimental number 25444 but was never to return and died on 11th June 1916

1st Bn Northumberland Fusiliers
In 1916 he had enlisted in Sheffield into the York and Lancaster Regiment with regimental number 25444. He later transferred into the Northumberland Fusiliers with new regimental number 39044, and served in their 1st Battalion. He was promoted to Sergeant. During an attack on the German lines in June 1918, Ernest did some splendid work in leading and looking after his men. Sadly, after the attack had gone in and the objective reached, he was hit by a bullet from a German sniper. He was immediately taken to the Regimental Aid Post and then passed down to a Dressing Station behind the front line. It was here that he died from his wounds on the 16th June 1918. He is buried at Pernes British Cemetery, France
