John was born at Arnold in 1896, the son of Maria Oscroft of Cross Street, Arnold his mother had re married to Albert Sheldon of Arnold, Nottingham around 1897 and he lived with his grandmother, Mrs J Sharpe, in Hardstaffs Yard, Front Street, Arnold. He worked for Mr J Herring & Sons Ltd, builders in Arnold.

10th Bn Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment)
Private John Henry Oscroft enlisted in September 1915 at Nottingham and served with the Sherwood Foresters regiment. After HIS initial training he was posted to their 10th battalion he was killed in action during machine gunning and shelling at Proyart on 13th August 1918. His name is commemorated on the Vis-En-Artoise memorial, France
In memoriam published 13th August 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “OSCROFT. – In loving memory of our dear brother, Henry Sharpe, who was killed in action August 13th, 1918, aged 25 years, buried at Merricourt, somewhere in France. Rest in peace. – From his loving brothers, Albert, Joseph, Jake, William, and Thomas Shelton. “OSCROFT. – In loving memory of Pte. John Henry Oscroft, of Arnold (better known as Henry Sharpe), the beloved grandson of Thomas and Alice Sharpe, who was killed in action August 13th, 1918, aged 25 years, buried at Merricourt, France.
