James Dunn Simpson was born in 1898 at Nottingham and was the son of John a jobbing builder and Margaret Dalziel Simpson of Mansfield Road, Daybrook, Nottingham. His father John was born in 1869 at Glasgow, his mother Margret Dalziel was born in 1866 also at Glasgow, they were married C1895 and had 5 children, sadly two died in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were James Dunn b1898, Martha b1899 and Margaret b1901 all were born in Nottingham. In the 1911 census the family are living at Mansfield Road, Daybrook and are shown as John 42 yrs a jobbing builder, he is living with his wife Margaret 5 yrs and their children, James Dunn 13 yrs a scholar, Martha 12 yrs a scholar and Margaret 10 yrs a scholar.

Machine Gun Corps
Private James Dunn Simpson enlisted into the Sherwood Foresters (21897) at Nottingham. In November 1915, the Machine Gun Corps was formed and on the 1st March 1916, 116th Company was established at Grantham in Lincolnshire and volunteers were requested from those already serving to transfer into the new Corps. During October 1917, the 116th Company M.G.C. were in the area of Polygon Wood to the north east of Ypres but they were not engaged on any major action until the 29/30th of that month. James was probably killed by artillery fire on 25th October 1917, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial Panel 154 to 159 and 163A.
