James was born in 1898 the son of John and Margaret Simpson. He had two sisters and in 1911 they lived lat Mansfield Road Daybrook.

Machine Gun Corps
He enlisted into the Sherwood Foresters (21897) at Nottingham. In November 1915, the Machine Gun Corps was formed and on the 1st March 1916, 116th Company was established at Grantham in Lincolnshire and volunteers were requested from those already serving to transfer into the new Corps. During October 1917, the 116th Company M.G.C. were in the area of Polygon Wood to the north east of Ypres but they were not engaged on any major action until the 29/30th of that month. James was probably killed by artillery fire.
