Arthur was born at Arnold in 1887 the son of Isaac and Caroline Wheat, he is shown on the 1911 Census as being 24 yrs of age, born in Arnold and his occupation is a railway engine stoker, his father has already died and he is living with his mother Caroline who is shown as a widow and states she was married to Isaac for 37 yrs, he was raised and educated in the town .

He enlisted into the Army at Nottingham and there joined the Northumberland Fusiliers. After his basic training he was posted to their 13th battalion which had been formed at Newcastle in September 1914. He was killed in action during the battle of the Somme
His body was never identified and he has no known grave, being commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France. Pier and face 10B, 11B and 12B
