Arthur Wheat was born at Arnold in 1887 the son of the late Isaac a brick maker and Caroline Wheat nee Briggs of Cavendish Street, Arnold. His father Isaac was born in 1852 at Arnold, he died in 1910 aged 58 yrs his mother Caroline Briggs was born in 1854 at Arnold, they were married in 1872 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they went on to have the following children, Sarah b1879, Annie b1876 and Arthur b1887. In the 1911 census the family are living at Cavendish Street, Arnold and are shown as Caroline Wheat 57 yrs a widow she is living with her children Annie 35 yrs a machine seamer and Arthur 24 yrs a railway engine stoker. Arthur marries his wife Abigail Lois Hardy born 1895 in 1915, their marriage is recorded in the Basford registration district. Following his death his widow Abigail is awarded a pension of 13 shillings and 9 pence a week which commenced on 12th March 1917. His widow re marries on 16th July 1917 to Thomas Donahoe a Private in the Labour Corps.

13th Bn Northumberland Fusiliers
Private Arthur Wheat enlisted into the Army at Nottingham and there joined the Northumberland Fusiliers Regiment. After his basic training he was posted to their 13th battalion which had been formed at Newcastle in September 1914. He was killed in action on 4th July 1916 during the battle of the Somme his body was never identified and he has no known grave, being commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.
