William Rose was born in 1898 at Fishpool, Nottinghamshire and was the son of John Charles a coal miner and Ann Selina Rose née Brown of Chapel Lane Fishpool Mansfield. His father John Charles was born in 1872 in Fishpool, his mother Ann Selina Brown was born in 1875 in Hucknall, they were married in 1895 , their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration District, they went on to have 7 children, Samuel Brown b1896 Hucknall, William b1898 Fishpool, Christian Eva b1900 Mansfield, Hilda b1904 Fishpool, Annie Mary b1907 Fishpool, John Charles b1909 Fishpool and Ann Selina b1910 Fishpool. In the 1911 census the family are living at Fishpool and are shown as John Charles 39 yrs a coal miner, he is living with his wife Ann Selina 36 yrs a housewife, Samuel Brown 15 yrs a domestic gardener William 13 yrs no settled occupation, Christian Eva scholar, Hilda 7 yrs, Annie Mary 4 yrs, John Charles 2 yrs and Ann Selina 1 yr.

Private William Rose, attempted twice to enlist at Mansfield and was refused because of defective eyesite. but he eventually managed to enlist at Hucknall, Nottinghamshire. He went to France 6th March 1916 and served with “D” Company, 17th Battalion Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment (Welbeck Rangers), he was killed in action on 13th April 1916. He is buried in Cambrin Churchyard Extension. Pas de Calais, France. grave reference Row F. Grave 48.
